Cutting a passageway from the Pacific to the Atlantic Oceans was a dream unfullfilled until the USA did so in 1904-1914. This was a major event and opened travel "cross continent" by ocean without the necessity of going down around South America. Outside of a major shipping route It draws tourist by the thousands. One can, also, take a train along the canel "cross continent" - a 50 mile stretch - and see both oceans and then return within a couple of hours [which we did!]. But first one gets to go through the canel itself. |
